An historical document for the first decade of the new century.
The Real Thing started as a flyer for the regular gigs being organised in the notorious Luna Bar and grew from there. It documented a corner of the Berlin music scene, and had a totally open editorial policy. The only items refused were usually only really bad poetry.
A combination of constant software malfunctions, computer meltdowns and printer fuckups meant that anything from a Mac Performa 450 and Claris Works to some other garage sale mac with some version of Quark and who knows where that copy of Photoshop came from (and all in a combination of languages) would be the tools used to somehow get something on paper in time for the gigs the advertisers had paid for.
The text was cramped in order to fit it all in and consequently hard to read - it was for afficiados.
Thanks to all the people who helped me make, print, fold and distribute the “thing”, and to the contributors. It was really one of those Berlin things.
As it was free, the end finally came when the advertising wouldn’t pay for enough copies to make it worthwhile.
There were eleven issues of the paper The Real Thing. Download a DJVU (Déjà vu) browser plug in and click on the links to the left to see it as it was printed.
