Cocktail International, The Methylated Spirits, Impure Thoughts, Last Dezibel live gig, 23/11/01
by Giles Schumm
„ CHRISTMAS is coming, the goose is getting fat - please put a ciggy in the crap buskers’ velvet hat“.
And the recent demise of DeziBel should flush more than a couple out onto the city’s cold festive pavements as one more welcoming hole for the proudly status-free bites the dust.
DeziBel did however provide a rockin’ finale to its booze-sodden couple of years on Fri.23rd Nov. with a 3-band bonanza featuring a galaxy of troupers too old/badly dressed to hack office life.
Being a member of COCKTAIL INTERNATIONAL, the first band, precludes me from unbiased criticism(we enjoyed it and if you’re lucky enough to have got this issue hot off the press you could too, at ZOSCH on Fri.30th Nov.) so I’ll move onto cheap booze-and-drug-scene faves, THE METHYLATED SPIRITS.
By the second song, four girls were up shakin their stuff (two from the COCKTAILS I might add), despite singer Jon’s not-fully-convincing „I work with amateurs & perform to fools“ pose. He delivered, as did the band: short, sweet & nasty, doing in half an hour what many bands take two hours to fuck up. And then they were off, having drawn the earnest onlookers out of the shadows, fuelled up and into the act - exactly what a support SHOULD do.
IMPURE THOUGHTS’ finale in their open-house living room left a dancing-room-only crowd of friends & strangers baying for more of their Country Soul Beat Panache. Personally, five hours into the set I WAS glancing at my watch & trying to work out how to get my parka from under the drum-stool, but what the fuck, the boys done good!
You don’t HAVE to appeal to secretaries & architects to make money, either, but if you’re passing the hat round to pay for Xmas dinner this year, make it a SHARP hat.
